Hi all, I'm new to this forum and looking for some help.I've recently purchased a Hystrix ray from an online company in the UK.The ray seems otherwise healthy (active and eating) but has an area of his skin that is white.Could this be a burn due to high levels in the bag he was shipped in? Or could it be fungal or bacterial?I've attached a picture and any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advanceDamien

Ok thanks will keep an eye on it, and add salt if necessary. Did suspect it wasn't a hystrix but I think most pics of hystrix on google are actually orb. Thanks again

The skin here is already healing, just good water is needed to complete the process, there is no open wound for infection to get in, it will take a few weeks for the pigment to reappear. It is possible the ray has had salt dropped directly onto it as a remedy by an inexperienced person before you got it, undissolved salt causes the same injury.

Hope you weren't buying a Hystrix because they are a smaller ray and you have limited resources? Orbignyi which it clearly is will eventually have a disc size associated with common Motoro, males 17-20" and females in excess of 24".

All the best with it.

Thanks thats put my mind at ease. Yes I did want a hystrix due to the smaller size :-/ I've read a few sites that say orb adult size is 35cm? Is this incorrect?

If you measure in cm then lets say 45cm for a male and 60cm plus for a female. I have had them this size many years ago. Potamotrygon orbignyi is a large species given the space to prosper. Although very variable in pattern and fairly wide spread this species is identified by the eyebrow pattern or mask to the side of the spiracle which can be clearly seen in your specimen.
Many so called Stingray experts selling these Rays simply don't know their Onions so to speak, buying on line without actually seeing both the rays and the facility in which your new acquisition is been kept in carries many risks. Also do these sellers offer good advice when things go horribly wrong...I think not!! If they can't identify the fish they are selling how on earth can they give good solid advice regarding other issues.

Glad to be of help, hope the ray does well for you.
