Hi guy's have just been in contact with a guy from the UK who has Hystrix for sale, for a fantastic price, I know its genuine as I can pick it up, he say's they are around 4". My only concern is my tank size I have a 50" by 20" now according to the stickies this is fine for a juvenile one, so I was wondering how long will he be okay in there? Also due to my cabinet set up I cannot provide a sump, at the moment I only have a couple of internal filters, what is my best bet for this? I take it I will get a lot of responses to do an fx5? Getting seeded media is not a problem as I have a LFS that will provide me with it!

Cheers.

You'll probably get away with that tank for 9 mos to a year, although 4' really isn't a lot of swimming space for a ray.

As to filtration, I've had my Hystrix in a tank that's only filtered by power filters (an Emperor 280 and 2xEmperor 400) for the last year (yes, I know: shock horror!).

If you think you'd be able to upgrade your tank within a year then i'd say go for it, if not then its probably not a good idea. You could keep the ray in there longer but I wouldn't, rays like to be able to swim around.

Filter wise I would say an FX5 is a good choice, I run 2 FX5s and an Eheim Pro3 on my 72"x24", keeps the water clean and parameters where they should be.

Upgrading wouldn't be too much of a problem! Especially when the family see how big they get, been looking at a filter from a local source would turn my tank over 7 times an hour is that enough?

I disagree with Erik, to a degree... i agree you need a big filter, but turnover rate is just as important as filtration IMO

Its not really about turnover, its more about bio space..Big canister!

I run big filter and low ish turnover without problems...as long as the ammonia and nitrite are always zero then the filter is doing it's job.

Pete lockwood has a lot of knowledge which allows him to get away with smaller filtration...bigger the better until you have worked out what you need to know.

Small tanks and small filters is not a good long term recipe for rays.
