For years, I've used only a simple HOB filter and replaced the cartridges on time like I'm supposed to. But now that my fish are growing and creating more waste, it seems like it's just not doing the job anymore. I had always thought that an undergravel filter would be the way to go, but after reading the stickies I'm thinking otherwise..

Long story short, I am looking for a proper filter for my 55G setup. My fish will thank you. :)

I always recommend Aqua Clear. What fish do you have? Give us a stocking list.

Oops - I guess I forgot to add that to my sig.

I currently have 4 silver dollars (3-4"), 1 bala shark & 1 albino bala shark (both 3.5"), and a gold severum (4.5").

A canister or a big HOB like the Aquaclear 110 or Emperor 400 would be good. What kind of power filter do you have now?

Instead of replacing the cartridges all the time, just take them to the kitchen and spray them off. HD and Lowes has a shower attachment that has a kitchen sprayer on a 6' hose. I have one and it takes a lot of the work and time out of cleaning things.

Btw, I haven't bought replacement cartridges in about two years.

i breed in a 55 .... huge fish load in the growouts wich are also 55...... on the breeder i run a fluval 405 canistor filter my parameters are right on water clarity is very nice.... my grow out has 2 aquaclear 110's and i do 40 percent waterchanges twice a week... you have a good load so i would go with a fluval 405 and keep your

oops keep your hob and run it along with the can.... dont run anymore charcoal in the can run some bioballs and other media types to suit your needs... do waterchanges more often

canister filters work great...

jsut use one or two ac 110 works great for 55g tanks :)
