ok i have a tank with 10x 2"ish jewel chiclids
one of the pairs had spawned for the fifth time till now(3rd time this month)
and every time they have eaten their eggs
so this time i put in a dividor thinking that they might not eat their eggs this time but unfortunately one of my beautiful female jewel chiclid happened to jump above the dividor and go into hostile territory when i came back from work she was all beat up
all the scales from the belly to the tail were lost and there were 2 nasty wounds and was upside down breathing slowly i just couldn't kill her as some of you would say is the better way to got but i don't think i can ever kill a fish
and right now she is in a 15g tank all by herself
and then in the evening i noticed one more female had beaten up by the remaining seven of the jewels
wasn't hurt real bad but has a bad looking tail and is hanging only at the top of the tank
so i have decided that from now on every time they spawn i remove the eggs and put them in a separate tank(will that work ) have read in GCCA that you can keep the eggs in a separate tank

had to vent and ask as to do what the next time sumthing like this happens

have to go home now and see what has happened to my wounded jewel i am so totally hoping that she survives but that does seem a far fetched idea

jewel cichlids get like that. they are crazy when they breed. i had six, and i am down to 4 (kinda). the 2 that are breeding, 1 that is missing a tail and is in hiding, and another that is just guts strewn on the plants and a skeleton under their wood.

oooh
i knew they get mad when they breed thats the reason why i kind of crowd them up
and it worked pretty well till i started putting a divider
and thats what is pissing me off

Either keep spawning pairs by themselves or with a LOT of other fish. This reduces the agression. I breed red jewels both ways. Tank set up really helps. I use a lot of small enclosed fake rocks (flintstone houses) to give them secure spawning sites. I keep quite a few Syndonis cats with our jewels and have never lost a fish to agression. I remove the fry to thier own grow out tanks as soon as they are free swimming to prevent the other fish from eating them.

i don't want to remove the spawning pair as the male is the alpha male there in the tank and removing him would cause the other four big ones to fight it out
i do have a few caves and a piece of bogwood too
as i said earlier it was alright during the previous four spawns when i didn't add a divider
but this time ...........................

Do you need a poll to know for sure?
nyaaah
i don't need a poll to know for sure
i already have been judged and proven :irked:

The main reason for removing a spawning pair is that a new pair will then color up. I usually maintain the numbers by adding a couple from the grow out tank to replace them.

hmm never thought about it that way
but all of my fish are all colored up and all but one male( this guy was the previous alpha male) are completely red and have those bright bluish or turquoise color

Thats a good warning sign that trouble is on the way...I usually only keep a single pair of breeding condition fish in any given tank.
