Well hello everyone I am new to this website and so far it seems wonderful let me introduce you to my tank. I currently have a 55 gal saltwater attempting to turn it into a reef tank lighting is 10,000k and actinic with led moonlight, I have a coralife super protien skimmer that I am currently having major issues with , under the tank I have a 75 gal sump where the heater is set for 82 degrees. inside the tank currently resides around 30 lbs of live rock 40 LBS live sand. livestock consists of one canary yellow damsel 2 peppermint shrimp 2 astrea snails and one shellfish not sure what kind it is but i have a bright red small bubble coral that was a hitchhiker and two green eyed button button polyps the tank has been established for two months now and im not sure if its finished cycling yet and advice on that? And also the protien skimmer i had it hangin on the back which was working out great but the collection cup would overflow with bubbles and almost caused an electrical fire I checked for air leaks in the seals and made sure the valve was on as small as possible but i had to move it to my sump so the overflow wouldnt go everywhere but it sends back alot of microbubbles through the return pump back to the tank please help wit this and also some suggestions of great starter coral and inverts would be great

Do you not test your tank regularly? You should always follow the cycle and test your tank atleast once a week to follow the nitrogen cycle.

You could just remove the skimmer, and build an algea scrubber. Protien skimmers remove food that the corals will eat and thrive off of. The algea scrubber will leave those important elements in your water and only remove bad ones, such as nitrate, algae, and phosphates.

Kevin will get to you with more details and correct any info i might have messed up on, he is better on these subjects.

also call coralife they should replace the skimmer for free.

your sump is bigger than your tank?

Whoh. That was harsh on the eyes. Lotsa questions. First things first. You shouldnt have any stock in a non-cycled aquarium, and if you did, most certainly no inverts or corals.

So Im going to assume your tank is "cycled".

On another note...82 is going to be a little high for corals. I keep my tank at 76 at night, and it goes up to 78 during the day. If there was a way for me to keep it at 78 all the time I would. Temperature is more important than you think.

Skimmers are something that deserve a LOT of money. Your skimmer and your lights are the two most important parts of your reef. I have a 75g reef aquarium and DONT RUN A FILTER. I have zero ammonia, nitrate, and nitrite. The reason why is because I have a well established system, keep things consant, have a good water change schedule, and have an awesome skimmer.

If you need any specific help you can pm me.
