RIght now I have 2 ornatus,2 auratus,2 Kennyi cichlids and 2 green spotted puffers in a 29g. I would really like a cyphotilapia cichlids. Question 1 do i have to buy more then one at a time? Are my fish compatible? and is there enough space in my tank for it? please comment...

In a 29 gallon? No. Frontosa CAN get 14 inches in length. You can try for now, but expect to buy a 125+ gallon tank in a few years.

You have spotted puffers? My brothers friend had puffers in his african cichlid tank. They were fine when they were small. After a few months, the puffers ATE the other fish. BTW: puffers have nasty looking teeth (not little stubs like cichlids. Puffers need to be fed snails on a regular basis to keep their teeth from overgrowing).

Hope that helps. :headbang2

Up grade to a 55gal as soon as possible your stock list in such a small tank will only be temporary if they are still young, when they start to mature the species you have chose will kill each other off, they are very aggressive Mbuna..

A 29gal would be perfect for Tanganyika shell dwelling species..

it could be questionable about if there compatible it just depends on the fish[i dont mean species i mean attitude] but it helps to buy more than 1 at a time

get rid of the ornatus and puffers...the auratus will kill them eventually...stick with other mbuna

Get a larger tank and save the 29 gallon for a hospital tank. You're going to need it.

i am also a beginner, iv had my pond since oct 2009 and ive recently had a bad problem with my fish geting fin rot and also 1 fish had at least had bad cotton mouth, i think i have had about 7 fish die from it. i also seem to have a problem with algae, my waters a green colour, i have now set up a new pond pump and filter to cope with 700 gallons an hour, my pond is approx 350 gallons. i have also installed a u.v. filter aswell, i was wondering if anybody can give me any tips to keeping algae and the disease down? the pond gets about 4-5 hours of sunlighta day?

I know this isn't African Cichlid related, but I thought I'd go ahead and answer.

How many fish do you have and their approximate sizes?

I have a 200 gallon tank with koi/goldfish right now (4,6 inch koi and 4, 4 inch fancy fatty goldfish).

[I'll be converting my 8 person hot-tub (700 gallons) to a pond this springs/summer; so don't worry!]

Anyways, I had as many as 10 koi in my 200 gallon tank. I noticed I had a lot of minor bacterial infections that wouldn't get any better. As you can tell I lost 6 fish (4 koi in tank). I attributed this to bio-load problems (even though I have about 1200 gal/hr filtration).

I would get more filtration in the form of bioballs/bio-media; do large water changes on a regular basis. There's a guy in my neighborhood with a 10,000 gal pond. He has a koi filter/Box that is 8 feet long and 3 feet wide, 1 ft deep. It's filled with pea-gravel though (beneficial bacteria grows on it). He has a substantial amount of koi in it and doesn't have any illness problems.

For the algae, there's a blue dye that you can buy that makes your water look awesome, and also prevents algae from growing. You can buy it at Petsmart. If your not into the dye, there's also chemicals that kill algae. I used AlgaeFix by AP that has worked well for me and hasn't had any ill effects to my fish. [I'm assuming your UV filter is powerful enough for your tank. For a 350, you'll need at least 10 watt bulb; maybe buy a more powerful pump to increase water flow(maybe 1000+ gal/hr)].

Hope that helps. Good luck !!!:headbang2:headbang2
