I've got jars all over the house, and a fishbowl outside. I've tried algae wafers, cichlid pellets, leaves, live plants and soil. I tried last year, too. What is the secret?

why do you want green water?

I'm wondering the same thing.

Actually all you need to do is drop one algae wafer in the jar that you have and leave it in the sun. Place it where the sun can hit it and the rain can't. Is your jar closed? If so, that MAY be the problem but don't get me wrong it work either way. Try poking small enough holes on the top of the jar so no mosquito's can lay there eggs in it.

I really don't see why your algae wafers is not working because after I dropped a couple of wafers in mine that my pleco's didn't eat, my water turned green within a couple of days with algae growing all over.

Remember- there's no such thing as spontaneous generation. Green water is formed by Euglena, a single-celled photosynthetic organism. To get green water you must have: water; food; light; and a starting population of Euglena.

Water left outside may collect Euglena in their spore form that are blowing in the wind. If the other elements are present, green water will form. A more reliable method is to inoculate your water with some green water from elsewhere.

I would be leery to use Miracle Grow on anything that was to be added to a fish tank or used in conjunction with a fish tank...

Have you tried obtaining water from a local lake or pond that has a greenwater effect?

you can buy concentrated bottles of phytoplankton at the store.
