Synspilum’s black mark on the side of the body only goes 1/3rd of the way down the body, maybe stopping at about the beginning of the anal fin.
Below is a young melanurus (AKA synspiluu, is no longer a valid name, since DNA testing shows melanurus and synspilus to be color morphs of the same species) and the name melanura was used first, so invalidates synspila
