I was at my LFS and saw a tank full of gouramies. The thing was that the sign only said "GOURAMIES", it never said what kind they where...

I have a few picture I took from my phone, any help on an I.D. would be great. They are about 1"-2" long.

Thanks

My guess would be Giant Gouramis. Colisa fasciata. The stripes look like it. But with as dull as the colors are i could very easily be wrong.

Colisa fasciata is not "giant gourami". The ones in the pics looks like females colisa chuna. or females colisa lalia.

giant gourami is one of the standard common names for colisa fasciata.

misleading I know because of the confusion with osphronemus.

thats why common names suck compared to the latin binomial names :)

thanks for straighten it up. I didn´t know that there were two fishes called giant gouramis. :)

Thanks everyone. Some of the fish in the tank have bright red outlining on their fins. It's hard to tell from the photo. I don't think I will buy one since I have no room for a giant fish. Maybe another day.

thanks for backing me up on the common name 12 volt. I've always seen C. fasciata as giant gourami, and O. goramy as True Gourami.

lizardking- i figured i was wrong on the ID. I think i should just stick to catfish. Then again i messed up a scientific name the other day. Well....:irked: must be having a bad week.

z- trip- whether its fasciata, lalia, or chuna none of them are monster fish. lizardking help me out on sizes but:
fasciata- 3-4"
lalia- 2-3"
chuna- 2-3"

It used to confuse me as well, when I first saw "giant gouramis" at Wal-mart I thought they were the traditional giants, luckily they ended up being Colisa fasciata which as it turns out is not actually all that giant. For the record I also agree that the fish in the picture are Colisa fasciata.
