I'm really excited to finally post one of these threads! I need this rainbowfish ID'd. I "rescued" it from my friend's 10 gallon.

It almost looks like a hybrid between a banded and millennium. It has the stripes of a millennium, but isn't as colorful. However, in that pic it looks like it has a band. I don't have the fish next to me right now, but I'll try to upload a video of it soon.

I do believe you have what is called:

Scientific name: Melanotaenia splendida splendida (Peters,1866)
Common name: Splendid Rainbow
Distribution: Queensland, Australia
Size: Males-4.5" Females-4"
Food: flake, frozen and live foods
Temperature Range: 70 to 82 deg. F
pH: 6.5 to 7.5
dH: 10 to 12 deg.

Mainly identifiable by the single red orange spot on the gill plate or cheek directly behind the eye, also two rows of light tourquoise striped scales directly above the lateral line of the fish.

Are there any oddball's around here that may be able to give us a second or third oppinion, please? But I am quite certain I am correct.

Thanks! It definitely seems to be some variant of splendida. Mystery solved in approximately 6 hours!
