Thanks...wiggles, what causes the different coloration? Different regions maybe? You have to agree they look nothing alike...the head structure is a bit different aswell

There's a lot of pattern & coloration variation amongst WALs; these are most likely from different localities. The head structure isn't a good indicator for ID purposes as captivity seems to have an effect on their head shape (spoon-shape vs. pointed).

If you don't mind me asking, where did you get both of them?

Thanks for your further opinion Wiggles....I've had the grey guy for about 3 years...got him at maybe 8-10" from T.F.D. (Tropical Fish Distributors) for $40 steal IMO. He's now 20" Its decieving because hes in a 650gal and looks way smaller lol. Tank is on cinders though and he exceeds the 16" blocks when he sits in front of the tank. Brown guy about 14-16" came from a good friend and fellow MFK in garettsville ohio a year ago maybe? for free :). I'm pretty sure he got it at RMS up in cleveland ohio. Never been there myself. Are you tracking where the diff. species are hitting? this could be interesting...I have seen a similiar lung to my grey WAL in pittsburgh. same orange around the head. they wanted crazy prices for it though. personally i love the grey color variation alot more than the brown just my opinion though.

I figured I'd ask where you got them as the various vendors & stores typically get their fishes from the same suppliers, but they occasionally get them from different ones. The spotted WAL looks similar to one that I had for a few months last year, and I actually traded it to a guy that lives in Wadsworth who no longer has it, so it could very well be the same fish.

I haven't come across any other species in the trade lately besides SALs; I saw MALs pop up once or twice a few months ago, but that was really it. I know that some SpALs came in during the summer of 2011 as I got one of them (dumb thing drowned); those were not expected by the supplier, though, so I doubt that they'll have them again any time soon.

You're lucky that those WALs haven't tried to take chunks out of the arowanas; they tend to do that eventually.

Only the grey is in the 650 with the aros. the spotted is in a 300 with an armored cat party. I always have 40 breeders laying around if something happens. I am worried of the big guy breaking the glass though if put in a small tank. I'm sure you know they can be powerful even though appear sluggish. I bet in some way my spotted was yours hah, Theres not many of us in ohio. Alot of fish seem to find me also, i've ended up with quite a few freebies over the years because i have the space. I've seen the damage my lungs can do but both have been in community style tanks since i've had em. I feel bad for them whenever i stick them in a 65 or 90 size tank alone. They just sit there. Grey WAL has only been in there for a month but i havent seen him move this much in three years lol.. Its funny to see him swim 24/7 after being in the shadows of my tanks for so long. I agree its a risk and will keep a careful eye, hes also been with 3 of the aros for 2 years in a 230...lucky so far i guess
