A local fellow reefer just bought this shark. As is too often the case it was bought not really knowing which one it is. He was told by the LFS that it would only reach ~18".
TIA:)

Another guy that saw it at the LFS said they were calling it a "nano shark".?.?

Indonesian Bamboo shark. They've been sold a lot by mistake as "zebra sharks" but they are not even close. They do stay small, but will still be the usual "bamboo" size when it's full grown. I've known them to be very picky eaters when they are small.

Thanks! I thought it looked like a bamboo but didn't recognize the color pattern.

Yeah, the first time I saw one in person, it took awhile to get a positive ID on it. Then I started seeing them pop up all over the place being sold as "Zebra shark pups".... The aquarium ended up with a ton of them to boost the shark count and because they sell so cheap.

If you can get one that is eating, the have cool patterns and offer something different than your normal brown banded and white spotteds.

Nice sharks, just too bad that beautiful pattern fades out with age.

Yeah - Indo Bamboos markings tend fade as they grow to adult hood, also they can grow to about 24-30" inches in total length(instead of the 18" that the LFS stated).

It's not just the LFS. Using "Indonesian Bamboo" in the Google search gives me - Hemiscyllium freycineti or Indonesian speckled carpetshark. All I have found online so far has said 46cm (~18.5") as well.

And there's your problem - you have the wrong scientific name for the Indonesian Bamboo. And wrong scientific name means wrong species info.

BTW - Hemiscyllium freycineti is the Freycinet's Epaulette Shark - which matures at about 18 inches, and are known to reach about 24-28 inches in total length. And yes it's sometimes known as the Indonesian Speckled Carpetshark.

The Indonesian Bamboo is actually Chiloscyllium hasselti. Also known as the Hasselt's Bamboo or "Zebra" Bamboo.

And Here's a Helpful note - it's always best to research shark species using their Scientific name instead of using the Common Name.

I was going on the info provided so far. You're the 1st to offer a Scientific name. Thank you
