The first fish brought me back to salt water and is in my 75g. The second blue fish I caught in the Gulf of Mexico (first fish in the Atlantic). They have the same tail and side markings, so that has me thinking that they are either related or the same.

First one reminds me of a true parrot and the second resembles a dovii. I am interested to know the I.D. and availability of the blue one myself....

im goin to say that they are along the lines of a black sea bass or tautog. both of those are NE fish so idk. just do a search for sea bass in the gulf

edit: just did the search myself, black sea bass are in the gulf and the first one looks like a sand perch of some sort.

I hadn't thought about the blue one looking like a dovii, but I see what you mean. I originally thought they were black sea bass in mating colors, but those we caught in the Atlantic never had a hint of blue or a kok. After we caught more in the Atlantic last week, I noticed that they have different tails. When we caught them in the Gulf, they were in a school. We caught all of them within a ten minute window but we were on the water for almost 24 hrs. When we catch black sea bass in the Atlantic, they are always individual stragglers or very small groups. We also catch them throughout the day and night.

Now that I have a saltwater tank again, I am ready to go get more :naughty:
For availablility, have a look at our keepers:

Thanks for the info. We had been catching sand perch for a while (looks identical to the picture below) but never knew what they were. Some we have caught were brilliant blue. I will be looking for more of them too :)

Are they in your tank now? Got any shots? How do they act toward one another?

Nope. The only saltwater fish I have right now is the fish in the first picture and an Atlantic Grunt. I didn't have the tank set up for the blue fish at the time so they are in the freezer. I caught a really cool puffer on that same trip. The camera didn't capture the color well at all. In the sunlight, the yellow on the spines and between the brouwn stripes was as bright as electric yellow labs. I want to go back to the Gulf to look for more reef fish.

they second fish is just a big black sea bass.

THe first fish looks like a bank sea bass, Centropristis ocyurus. The last one is a striped burrfish, Chilomycterus schoepfi

1st Grouper is a Bank sea bass, 2nd is a Black Sea Bass.
Only 1 more and you've completed the genus...
Rock Sea Bass!
