I recently bought 5 Geo's that were sold to me as "surinamensis", i realise a lot of geo's that look similar are grouped under that name and i'm trying to ID them more accurately...

The thing that made me want to ID these fish is that they have something i haven't seen in a geo before... They have black throats! and the 2 that paired up and spawned, their throats turned Jet Black!

From the research i've done on the net one name keeps coming up.... Geophagus Brachybranchus ie Black throat surinamensis or Guyanan black-throat.

Pics coming soon...

Any info on this species would be much appreciated!

If they turn out to be brachy's they could be worth a hell of a lot more than i paid! :headbang2

They are delayed mouthbrooders, they laid the eggs and guarded them for 48hrs then the female picked them up and hasn't opened her mouth since...

The black is always there and became very intense when they spawned.

I'm in australia and I've spoken with 2 geo specialists who have both said if they are Brachy's.... they've only seen them once or twice in the country, super rare apparently.... One guy said a wholesaler offered some to him for $200ea

I guess i'm looking for an un biased opinion because these guys may say "na, their just normal surinamensis.... i'll give you 2 bucks for each fry" when they are really the rare sp.

Here are some pics....

they do look be the geos you mentioned, i have seen brachys for sale in the UK quite often tom halverston brings them in.
i am no expert though.

Thanks for the info mate! Do you have an email address for Tom halverston?

Do you think he would ID them for me?

Surely there's someone with Geo experience on here

Guppy, oddball.... you guys have any info?

I can't tell you what you have, but when you talk to someone who knows geos, you need to let them know where and who you got them from. Most times that will help narrow it down.

They look stunning. I don't think if i was offered one for £200 i would buy it.

Their a great looking fish, it's the first time i've owned Geo's and i'm liking it!
Everything is more expensive in Aus, i don't think Geo's have been imported(legally) for years...
