My girlfriend has a 10 gallon guppy tank, it’s been setup for about 2 months it was cycled Ammonia 0 nitrite 0 nitrate 20 when we bought the fish. She bought some more fish probably too many to soon, and one died, nitrite was .50 and ammonia was 1. So I figured just too many fish to soon so started using prime to keep them alive, then the nitrite went to .50 and ammonia stayed at 1.

Here is what I don't understand, for the next week nitrite stayed at 0 and ammonia stayed at 1. How can I have a previously cycled tank have 0 nitrite and still have ammonia, I asked if she put untreated tap water; and she said no. So I ran out of prime still have Ammonia 1 and nitrite 0 after two weeks, so I figured all the bb was gone, and the tank was in a full blown cycle.

Here is the really strange part, I have a 55 gallon tank with sump, in the sump I have kept a sponge filter submerged in water but not running. So I took this out thinking hay my 55 gallon is cycled the sponge should have bb on it, I placed this sponge filter in the aquarium, hooked it up and did a 90% WC. Day 1 with this filter in the tank ammonia went from 5 to 1 or so and nitrite went from 0 to .25. So I was happy, I figured ok now it on a fast track to cycling again and the fish will live. Day two Ammonia not a 1 but not a 2 nitrite .25, day Three ammonia 2.0 and nitrite .25

How did this happen the tank stayed at ammonia 1 and nitrite 0 for 2 weeks, as soon as I put established media the ammonia shoots up?

I feel bad for the fish, I can't put them in my 55 I dont want to crash it by adding 9 new fish. It's my fualt I didn't monitor her fish keeping, I went throw killing fish in an uncycled aqarium with my 55G and a bad batach of bio spira.

It's not as much re-cycle as adjusted-cycle.
Yes you probably added too much bio-load too quickly.
It will stabalize, I'd do smaller WC (40%) daily till ammonia and nitrites are 0.
should not take long since you introduced the additional used media.

Thank you for your adivse, I love my fish and give a lot of attention to them, It was my mistake allowing her to maintain and care for her own tank. She did the same thing to my tank a while back. I had finally got my tank almost cycled with ammonia at 0 and nitrite down to 2ppm from 5ppm, well i cam home from work and there where 3 new fish in my aquarium. Couldn't be to made she just wanted to surprise me.

Unfortunately smaller tanks tend to be a little more sensitive to change than larger systems. Keep a tight eye on the params and let us know how it works out.

Agreed, and go easy on her. Try explaining how the bacteria works in the tank, and how it is like 5 people crapping in the house toilet between flushes.

Thanks guys.

Got ammonia down from 4 to only 1, and nitrite from 0 to 1. So I think the tank should complete its cycle in the next few days.

That's the benefit of a smaller tank: short cycling time. Sounds like you're heading in the right direction.

Tank is recycled now took 5 days. hopefully no perm damage was done
