So, I'm buying a 180 gallon tank and building my own stand with some plans from the DIY section on monser fishkeepers.

I'm planning on getting a jag and I want something else that can go with it. I was thinking a red tiger motaguense or a loiselli but I'm really liking the look of some of the pike in the "Official pike cichlid photo shoot" thread.

Do you think they would be compatible? and if so, what pike would be the best for the 180 with a jag?

If worse came to worse and I couldnt get a 180, I might end up with a 125 so i was just wondering if I did what would be a good pike that could go with the jag in the 125 aswell?

Thanks in advance! :mr-t:

Yeah, I was planning on getting them at the same size, I probably wont even get a pike. I have so many other fish I'm considering getting and i have no Idea what I want. I either want a Jag with a red tiger motaguensis, a lioselli, a grey bichir, or just FW rays by themselves.

I really have no I dea what Im getting!

patience is a virtue my friend..

I would go with a pike. Jeff Rapps has some for sale that would work out for you. But as Taz mentioned, just stay away from the dwarf pikes.

Well, I thought I had lost you when Rally posted pictures of his jag...haha. You seemed to have lost all interest of pikes, which is fine, as some people just don't like them. Those that do though get QUICKLY addicted to them. One of our members here, MTN Pike, has almost 18 different species of pikes...thats a lot. They are absolutley addicted to them. Many of us are just as addicted, just don't have the space or the money...haha...its either one or the other, or both...ha.

As to answer your question, there are MANY pikes that would work out in that situation. Definately stay away from the dwarfs as was stated. Some of the more common dwarfs are Crenicichla regani, Crenicichla compressiceps, and Crenicichla noto. (i hate spellin that one...ha). You should try and get Lugubris pikes, as they grow larger, are generally more attractive, and are more active. Saxatilis group pikes are also another option, but I'm partial to Lugubris myself, haha.

Here is a list of pikes that would work out superbly with your jag: Crenicichla cincta, Crenicichla marmorata, Crenicichla lenticulata, Crenicichla sp. 'cobra', Crenicichla johanna, Crenicichla sp. 'tapajos red', Crenicichla vittata, and Crenicichla sp. 'atabapo'. I left out Crencichla sp. 'venezuela' and Crenicichla sp. 'xingu I' as they either get to large or are generally too aggressive. I tried to focuz more on color and attitude. Look those up, if you see one your are interested in I'll help yaz in what ever way i can in gettin closer to gettin that fish! Hope this helps a little! The above fish will all work in either size tank you listed btw...;)

Sorry I didnt look here sooner! I was off looking at other posts. Thanks alot Peanut_Power for all of the fish reccomendations!

I tried to check up on ordering a jag today, and the lady at my LFS just said "I have heard of them, but Im not familiar" thats when I started losing hope. And then she tells me she ONLY orders from cichlidexchange and wont order from tangledupincichlids.com or anywere else. I asked why and she said she didnt trust them!

She then began to argue with me infront of other customers! It was purely rediculouse and I will never buy or even visit there again.

My other LFS helped me out greatly. I asked about a 125 gallon tank and they said they could order one with glass hood, and two sets of prolights to light the whole tank would be about 800. Wich I dont think is that bad. The tank is 6ft long, Im not sure on width but I'll check before I decide to order it and everything.

They had a pike in and only labeled it as Pike. It was in a planted tank with two needle-nose gar. I wish I knew what kind it was, it was pure black... but I dbout that helps.

I am now going to look at every fish your have just recommended!

So far Im liking the Lenticulata, The 'Cobra', Johanna, Tapajos Red, Vittata, and the Atabapo. I notice they only get 10-14'' though, wouldnt they be a tad intimidated by a 20-25'' Jag?

I the the Atabapo is the Pike that was in the planted tank with needlenose gar. I think its on of my most favoritest if thats even a word!

Thank you so much for all the help.

You show me any jag that gets 20''. Maybe a dovii, in which cases nothing is gonna survive.
