Went to a few chain petstores to price some things and such and of course took a glance at the fishy section. And I don't understand why they put some fish together.

I mean... they ARE trying to sell them right? And I really doubt you sell many fish that have fins torn to hell and scales missing...

I mean... in this 10 gallon tanks (at best) this one tank had 3 red devils and 5 gts in the same tank. Well let me rephrase... 2 live rd's and two live gt's. And you can already guess what was going on... one dominant RD in the middle of the tank... the other fishes fins were torn to hell and they were in the corners of the tank.

Now I know chains stores don't care about their fish blah blah blah... but isn't this a horrible decision business wise? You aren't gonna sell the battered and dead fish. Who makes the decision on what goes with what at a huge chain petstore. Is it "pre determined" by the business/store... or is it up to the manager or the head fish guy or what?

Pre determined by corporate.

Not all chains are the same nor are individual stores within a chain. And I've heard and been given plenty of bad advice from professionals at private stores.

Corporate Pet stores view fish more of an 'in-stock item' than a live animal. You should be able to walk into the store 365 days a year, and be able to purchase every fish they carry, every time. If an item is out of stock, it is replenished. Unfortunately, the re-ordering process dosn't take into account the size or temprament of existing fish.

Best thing you can do is call the 1-800 number, and complain.. over and over.

and over.

Until it gets old.

They will eventually get the idea. Also comment on the picture tags and inaccurate info (Pangasius, etc)..

some people just care to sell... :(

Right - its just about the money... the people simply don't take a second look, usually (The workers)

i have a small local pet store thar is just awfull, the tanks are dirty it smells awful and there are some dead fish in the tanks. But he will order fish if he can and somtimes will give me a deal if i buy enough.

cjohll - Why do you continue to shop there? This is probably WHY these LFS continue to keep fish this way, because people continue to shop there regardless.

I know at the earl mays closest to me, the employes know very little, except the manager who actually takes really really good care of the fish, and i very seldom find dead fish in the tanks. its really quite good because i can just tell them what i want, they get it for me, and don't try to tell me all this other stuff that is un-necessary. even big chain stores like petsmart, petco, earl mays (not walmart though lol) and the like can be good.
