So I started with a 10 gallon, moved up to a 20 long, and now I am moving to what I thought was big considering what most people have, a 75 gallon. Now that I have come to this site I feel the burning urge to go BIGGER. LOL! :naughty: All these huge builds I see on here. Average seems to be somewhere between 200-500 gallon.

So where did you all start? How big was your first tank and what made you want to go bigger?

Mine was the 10 gallon and I decided to go bigger because I everytime I walked into the LFS we walked out with another fish. Now i just need a bigger tank to make my fish feel more comfortable. Probably gonna end up going bigger once I get into buying a home and not living in an apartment. I think MTS may be taking hold. :grinno:

wooooo I feel small too I have a ten gallon a 15 gallon currently empty and a 37 gallon. im soon getting a 75 perhaps even a 90 then ill feel better

All my tank sizes in chronological order:

~1998-1999 ______________________Present
_____20g --> 55g --> 1/2g (bowl) --> 225g --> 2g --> 3.5g

The last three are the ones I have setup currently.

Reason for upgrading from 20g to 55g to 225g = wanted bigger, more exotic fish.

Reasons for upgrading from 1/2g to 2g = wanted to give my betta more space and a filter

Reason for getting 3.5g = I had one danio left over from cycling my 225, so I had put it with my betta, then I got a mystery snail (well 2 actually, but one died), and the betta kept biting the snail, so I got the 3.5g for the danio and snail to share.

Ut-oh.... keep an eye on those snails lol. We thought we were buying just one mystery snail. But one almost never means just one lol. A few weeks later we had a TON in our tank. We didn't know they could breed with themselves until it was too late lol. They will take over! lol

Well I think its a little too late for mine to breed, since one of them died the first week I had it (a the very end of last May). :grinno: tbh, I really wish mine would have bred though, they would have made a nice snack for my pacu. :)

If you have one, you will soon have many. We got one for our 20 long and I regret getting it, I have tried twice now to get rid of them in the tank and they still come back.

Oops, our snails are Ramshorn snails, not Mystery snails like I originally thought! I just looked up pics of them.

We bought just one, and boom... soon after we had tons lol. The guy at the LFS said they weren't asexual.... boy was he wrong! They are taking over the tank lol. We cleaned the tank, had the gravel and all decorations in really hot water for like 20 mins and we STILL have a ton! Unfortunately our fish won't eat them lol. We are considering getting an Assassin snail to eat them up!

Its not the size that makes an impressive set-up. I would never suggest that you are trying to impress anyone, but if you are, a clean, well thought out and impecably maintained smallish tank goes way farther than a 500g tank with a couple hang-ons and a once a year water change regimen (whether it needs it or not right?)

It has been stated before but bigger is almost always better, dare I say easier? But if all you can afford ( and I dont mean just the initial purchase of the tank) is a smallish tank, just maintain it the best you can and bigger will come. Reality is, bigger is more to stock, heat, circulate, filter and medicate, not to mention maintain. What about a 200g leak in your apartment? I'd rather clean up 75g.

Usually, we get bigger out of necessity. Often we want to impress. Whatever it is, responsible fish keeping is core to the hobby no matter what size the tank.

Well, mine has been single for over 2 months, and since they reproduce sexually, I doubt it will ever have babies. Btw, from what I've heard, it really isn't that hard to get rid of them. Since they lay their eggs above the water's surface, all you have to do is remove them before they hatch.
