The problem was mainly due to me feeding 12-18 market shrimps every other day with 10 massivore pellets, 30-40 hikari stixs, and 3-5 frozen feeders. This is all in one feeding. I cut back on market shrimp feedings from four times to two times a week and the water stay crystal clear for the whole week without any sick bichir. I would test my water to do the experiment but my water never had ammonia or nitrate. I am guessing that the ammonia level is so low that the API test kit didn't pick up. If you're having filtration or water problem issue then I hope this tip would help you out.

In addition, I also sold 5 bichirs.:(:wall::cry: In less than one week I picked up 5 new bichirs!:D

yeh feeding does effect filteration,i sorta solved that by lower the temp of my tank so my fish dont as high metabolism so i dont feed as much anymore, believe me i save so much money! and my tank is super clear now,you notice Joe? my recent photos have clear background and surrounding, last month it was all cloudy, murky? my temp was 84-86 fish got hungry hella fast! now its in 78-82 range

I think I just get excited watching my fish eat. I just didn't realize shrimps can cause an ammonia spike. My temp has always been 79-82.

I noticed most of the time your tank is clean. I know you put a lot of working into maintaining to be sparkling clean.:)

i barely got 17-18 bichirs he has like 2x my amount LOL and my tank wasnt clean with AUL and massive feeding,i cant believe the AUL makes my tank dirty fast, but since i did more waterchanges frequently and lowered temp, feed less, its all good now!

Hmm i dunno i am under filterd and over stock and never have ammonia spike or any problems of the sort. I am running a ac50 on a 55 gallon with a bubble wond, 5 cichlid,1pleco,1 electric catfish and 1 senegal and no problem. In my 10 gallon i got 1gouramis,4 painted fish(i dont condone painted fish girl bought them) and 1 ornate with the beginners filter, u know the one u put carbon and that pillow liner in and everything is always clear and good. Funny thing is when i had the ac50 on a 20 and 30 gallon my tank was always cloudy and fish always had ich, i dunno what it was but atleast i got it correct. I also feed 2x a day, cichlid gold, cichlid staple, spirulina discs krill and or earth worms. and no problem with the underfiltration but had a problem with over filtration hmm

Rich, i dont think your tank is overstock

Oh ya then i can get somemore polys then my sengal is lonely and it will be awhile until my ornate can go in the tank with him because he is 2 small and will get eaten by my electric catfish

I think the problem he was having with his filtration was due to feeding market prawns to his fish. It dramatically increases the bio-load in the tank and that shrimp juice doesn't help things either. You could try to rinse the prawns before you feed them.

I always thawed out the shrimp by rinsing. The problem is the juice in the shrimps making the water cloudy for 30mins after a feeding. Now that I reduced feeding market shrimps, my water stay crystal clear all day. I'm not trying to incite a debate here. I'm just passing along this info for my people that like to overstock their tank with bichirs like me.:D If my house was not on a raised foundation I would have a 500g tank sitting in my living room.:)
