Ok, so I'm a newb to the forum and the hobby and I've been getting some help from some of y'all and I can't appreciate it enough. So as I'm ramping it up and getting more into it, I'm following some advice and doing a water change today and my filter seems to be acting up yet AGAIN! UGH! I spend a couple of hours fiddling with it all, but I'm puzzled about the filter. I mean, I just followed y'alls advice and fixed it so what did I do wrong??

I try a couple of stupid things, and then open the filter canister itself. OMFG! There is a fish in my intake hose!! I mean, it's like "dead" dead! Not only that, but it's poor little face has been misformed into the shape of the suction tube! It's snout is in the shape of the smaller tube to the filter. I've never seen that before and I feel awful! So of course the first thing I do is call my teenagers to come over and take it out of the filter hose because I can't do it. I don't know what to do to keep that from happening again.

sounds like the o ring is bad might order another one and as for the fish being sucked up you can do one of two thing 1. get a sponge pre-filter or 2 make sure the fish are not small enough to be sucked up as i try to remember you have a fx5 and those are pretty strong filters so i would go with a sponge pre-filter. personally i do not have one but thats what i would do

Ya gotta have some kind of strainer on the suction tube.

Yes, I know! But now I'm wondering what else I'm doing wrong. I mean, I just got the tank because I had no choice, and I really really love it, but I'm afraid that I'm just messing it all up. I think I need to try to keep it simple. But that just really got to me today. I never had that happen before. The irony was I was just looking at those strainer things. :(

dont worry to much about it we all went through learning curves when we just started and still learn every day. your actually doing the best thing and asking some of us are to stubborn to ask for help but people like you make their fish's lives better everyday. so all i have to say is keep up the ambition to further your knowledge of this hobby

And that's really what I'm after. I'm more than willing to learn and get dirty, I just have never had a source to learn from before. And I have TONS of questions. I'm just happy that I found this site. :)
