Where there is sunshine
hey guys,
Ok to begin with, I don't know ANYTHING about stingrays because its illegal to have them in california. But today, I went to my lfs and they had two rays! The owner told me that he was selling them in the name of "whiptail foundler!(yeah wtf..). THere were two left and I couldn't resist.. so I bought them both..But today morning one of them was dead..:( I don't know why.. I don't want the other one to die.. so plzzz help me by answering a few questions...The surviving ray is about 6" in diameter...

1) How do I know if they are eating or not?
2) My lfs told me that they like tubifex worms... so, I put some worms in the tank but they r not eating them.
3)Are they really active or sedentary? coz mine are really sedentary.
4) I have put them in a 55 gal tank with sand @ the bottom(for now).. I have 1 redtail barracuda in it(5") and a lot of feeders.. The feeders keep on bothering my ray, they go and nip its tail and "graze" on its upper part.. Is it ok? coz I can always put all the feeders in another tank.

thanks.

here are some pics... can u guys id them plzz

yeah I know...
But thats the best one I can probably get in the bay area I guess....

Feed it earth/red worms...No ray will turn down a worm...

Whiptail flounder huh.....Well, try the worms and get it nice and healthy....You should read the "stickies" in this forum about owning rays....

Are you planning on getting a larger tank in the range of 300gals?
The ray looks good, curious to why the other one died...how did you intorduce it to your tank.....Rays need to be slowly switched over....even more so when they are young....

How much did you pay for your ray/flounder?.....You took a big risk getting them....and the pet store took a bigger one selling/having them....

I hope it gets healthy and fat, and a larger home soon!

I will transfer him to my 240 later....
But rite now... he is gonna stay there...

I paid $100 each...and I took about 15 mins to switch the water(adding more aquarium water into the bucket with the ray)....I read that I should feed them chopped earthworms...how small should the pieces be? coz I put some tubifex worms in there with some chopped earthworms...
The ray ate only the tubifex worms..

and another question:
how do I know if my ray is eating or not?

get those big feeders out the tank. the rays mouth is to small for that. i see you threw a $100.00 because you dont know about the safe keeping of rays.if i was you i would change where i live. if you going to post rays in CA because you dont know whos looking to bust someone, fine lockup and take their rays. please be smarter then that...... trust me i want to help but keep it on the down low where you live...... keep lights off for few days....turn temp up to 86f... if the one ray last in 72 hours you will be fine...

The reason one ray dies, as you most likely know by now, is because of your ascclimation method. You say it only took you 15 minutes which is way too fast.

I am in no way a ray expert, but the two rays that I have bought were succesfully acclimated using the slow drip method and it took about 2 hours each!
