I got a new fish just recently, and I have recently established it as a Hujeta. I've been keeping it in our (only) family tank, and so far, it has eaten six dollars' worth of fish in two meals, two very small tiger barbs. it was cool to watch, but I need to get it in a new tank. what would be the best tank dimensions/tank mates/plants for this fish?

I've read around a little bit, and I may already have a few ideas.

as you have already figured out, hujetas are predatory...

they get up to 9-12".. from what i've seen with my hujeta is that they are slow growers... they are a schooling fish so they prefer to be with other hujetas but that is not needed...

right now i have my 6" one in a 125 gallon tank with larger peacefull south american cichlids...

hujetas are predators so do not keep them with any fish that will fit into their mouths, however they are not too agressive so don't keep them with agressive fish...

the bigger the fish grows, the bigger the tank will need to be... (i'm not to certain on the smallest tank you can keep them in, but i do know a 125 is big enough for a full-grown adult)

hujetas will mainly only eat live foods (fish) however i have taught mine to eat freeze dried krill.. i'm pretty sure crickets will also be a good food source since they move (getting the attention of the hujeta) and float on top of the water...

I'm not sure about the 125 gallon tank size, it's a little too much for my current living quarters, but I will try for a larger tank. and for the cichlids, they do seem like a good idea. would angelfish be too aggressive for Hujeta? mine is currently 3-4 inches long, BTW.

A 50 gallon may be just fine for a hujeta for a long time (if not for life)... angelfish are a perfect idea, just be sure to get ones that the hujeta cannot eat (so no tiny cute ones:D lol)

i have two angels in with my hujeta in the 125...

a 50 gallon tank sound like it'd be just about right. now, I just need to talk to my 'rentals about it... lol. and the angelfish at my local store would actually be a little larger than my Hujeta is now. as soon as my next paycheck, I'll have to get him his own habitat.

So, plantwise, I've heard topwater plants would be the best choice for a hujeta.

good,

some topwater plants are good, to keep the lights off of the hujeta since they stay just under the water surface... however they still need some free space to swim (as i have found)

you could do live or fake plants depending on if you want to do live and if you would have fish that would eat the live plants, but either type is good.

is a 55 48"x12" or 48"x18"? i dont think 12" would b big enough
