My Oscar bit me during feeding time today, which is perfectly normal, but for the first time in all of my years keeping oscars, it actually hurt and is bleeding.
My first Oscar, Calcifer, used to bite me all of the time, even as a full grown 14 inch adult. It only ever felt like getting gummed by a baby.
My second Oscar, Gir, rarely bit me.
If he did, it was because he missed the food he was trying to snatch from my fingers. Once again, it only ever felt like getting gummed by a baby.
My third and current Oscar, Brutus, bites me daily, likes to jump and go after my face when getting fed, likes to bite while I'm doing water changes, and very much enjoys trying to munch on my fingers, and up until today, has felt like getting gummed by a baby.
But today, when he bit me (I was holding frozen brine shrimp this time, trying to thaw it in the tank), it felt liked getting jabbed by a needle and I started bleeding.

This now has me wondering if they have different kinds of bites, and know when to differentiate between when to bite out of agression, when to bite for attention, and when to bite to rip off flesh (or rip brine shrimp out of ones fingers)

Yes, he's a butt hole.
Yes, he likes to bully me.
And yes, unfortunately, I still love him and will forgive him in a few minutes when I'm done nursing my bleeding finger and hurt feelings lol.

Oscar tax attached
Brutus is the big red people bully (the guilty party)
Flower is the smaller tiger, and is sweet and timid and shy.

My flowerhorn bites me all the time during water changes and he normally draws blood from my hand. Those darker dots are his teeth, it don’t look like much but man they’re razor sharp. I let him bite my thumb to see the damage he can do image.jpg7B654908-2E7F-4846-A103-0DFCE552EE62.jpegimage.jpg

I don’t hand feed my fish and very careful to be aware of where my puffer is during water change. The last thing I need is an I’m open wound in a fish tank. Mycobacterium infection would be the reason I would stop fish keeping. Lol.

My oscar Brick nailed me on the wrist once and it hurt...felt like a serrated clamp with sandpaper (or a monkey wrench). Had red welts for an hour...I was impressed by the strength of the bite. He was pissed because I kept moving stuff around in the tank. Usually I can put my hands in the water with no issue so this might have been a 'one off' deal. Was over a year ago.

I usually don't hand feed my fish. Brutus is too set on getting at my face to take the time for that. I don't know what went through my mind when I decided to try to thaw the brine shrimp in the tank. I know he bites... I guess I had one of my genius moments lol.
