My sister-in-law has a smallish tank that is overgrown so she brought me some plants. It's a couple of swords and some java moss, but I think it's made a huge difference. Besides the obvious aesthetics, the fish really seem to like it. The big sword in the middle has given a sort of border to the big jags' chosen spawning site. And the plants give the smaller Convict females a little more refuge from the TSN's that have terrorized them and depleted their numbers a bit. I've probably lost 4 or 5 of the six Convict females. They were all under two inches. There are still 2 or 3 female cons and the original 7 males. The males are much larger and are wise to the TSN's and avoid them at all costs.

Also, so this isn't strictly a photo thread, I'll give you guys a couple of small updates. Albie, the big albino Oscar, still is displaying some early breeding behavior. She has dug in a couple of different places, but didn't seem satisfied with either. The other Tiger Oscar has become very protective of the space around Albie. It's mostly the TSN's that seem to aggravate the oscar's. And the jags too for that matter. Both pairs seem to view the TSN's as a threat to their spawning and both the jags and oscars are paying them a lot of attention. I have an offer to buy the TSN's from a buddy and will probably take him up on it. I will add another synodontis or two just to help with the janitorial duties.

Since I mentioned the jags, it seems as if they're getting comfortable enough in their new surroundings to spawn again. Also, the new male mota and the female mota are spending almost all their time swimming together. They seem to have really taken a shine to one another in a short period of time.

Everything else seems to be going great with the new tank. I haven't run into any issues with leaks or water levels or really anything. I'm finally able to use the full capacity of my pump, a QuietOne 6000 (1,506gph minushead loss). The drains and the return are both operating at full capacity. I had to turn down the pump with a ball valve on the old tank. Overall, I couldn't be happier with the way things have turned out so far, knock on wood, lol.:D

How do you guys like the plants?

I'll try and get some photos without the reflections later tonight when it's nice and dark. I'll probably take a bunch and put them in the Photo Lounge. Thanks for looking and thanks once again for this great forum. If it wasn't for all you guys (and gals), I wouldn't be where I am now in this hobby. Thank you.;)

Looks good, I don't think any of the plants will last with that stock list though! The oscar hasn't tried to rip everything to shreds yet?

No, they haven't bothered them yet. I have the swords tied to rocks and semi-buried in the sand. The java moss is tied to the wood. I'm a little apprehensive at having plants in there because of the fishes, likeyou metnioned. But they were free so I might as well give it a shot. I hope I can keep them and that they won't get torn up. We'll see...

Really nice set up. I am shocked your plants are still intact lol. My plastic plants don't even last with my cichlids. lol.

Don't be shocked. It's only been a couple of hours, lol.:D

OK first you've got all these guapotes living together in peace...and now they're tolerating plants? What are you feeding these fish, and is it legal??? :) I've actually heard of really big oscars in big tanks tolerating plants (never had any luck personally) but with that many cichlids I'm thinking somebody's bound to try a little underwater clear-cutting :(

Yeah might be wise to move out the TSN's if you're interested in having any surviving fry. I'm told syno eupterus are excellent scavenger type cats but I haven't tried them. A bichir might help also, especially with any meaty stuff that gets missed.

Haha, it's not an issue of having them uproot stuff - though I guess tieing them down is the best way to try and get them left where they are.

The problem with oscar's and other large cichlids is they like to redecorate their tanks, so they'll shred plants while trying to move them around...

You've got more of a chance doing this then you would if you had say some Vieja in there, which are true omnivores - but I still doubt the plants will last. Of course they were free, so like you said why not give it a shot - I would put more money on the moss than the swords!

I'm not sure if these plants will last or not. They've only been in there today. But, so far, they actually seem to enjoy them. I'm almost certain I'm selling the TSN's. The money is too good to refuse. Plus, like I said, the Oscars and jag pair are getting very irritated with them coming around and the TSN's aren't easy to shoo away. I've already got a Synodontis eupterus and he does a great job cleaning up any and all uneaten food on the bottom. Once the TSN's are gone, I'll probably get another one. As for meaty stuff, the synodontis gets rid of that too. He's even eaten feeders before.

I think as long as they don't thrash around near the plants, they might be ok. A couple of the smallerfishes actually like to sit in between the leaves. Maybe it makes them feel a little more comfortable. I don't know, we'll see. I hope the plants do last though. I love the look.

Ok, I talked my sis-in-law out of one more plant. I also added two more small pieces of Malaysian wood I had laying around. I also removed the small clay pots. The Convicts weren't using them (that was my intention) as they've found other more suitable hiding spots. I've got some small stones to scatter about in the front, but other than that, I'm pretty satisfied with the aquascaping. Check it out. I'm open to any and all critiques and/or advice.
