I hate algae

it doesnt go away. i have a 75gallon tank (see sig for stock) its been setup for almost a year now and i have an algae problem. i clean my sand and plants weekly to get rid of the green algae and with in days there is a thin coat on the sand and the pants are covered. what can i do to get rid of this? i think it may have something to do with high phosphate levels in my water. how can i get this out? thanks in advanced for the help

Are you overfeeding?

Too much light?

Cover the tank for 3-4 days after cleaning so no light can get in (no peeking).

Reduce feeding during this time.

After the 4th day see if the algae came back as fast as before (try to be objective). If so phosphates, if not, overfeeding or not enough filtering to remove old food particles.

i only feed once a day and i see my fish eat all the food so nothing is left over. ill try covering the tank and keeping the light off. im also planning to make a wet dry, buying the pump and plumbing tomorrow. thanks for the advice

if your not growing any plants, lights need only be on for 6-9 hours. Phosphate contributes huge to algae growth, as does nitrates. What is your water change schedule?

i take out 15-20 gallons every week

my 2 pbass are around 4-5" my ocsar is 6ish and my firemouth is 3-4".


i would start doing larger water changes but if there are phostates in my water that would just make it worse. im going to set a systme so its easier todo water changes so ill be able to do them more often.
