I have a 55 gallon planted tank, with three small Uaru, 8 blue flame tetras, 10 neons, 10 black neons, 5 marble hatchets, 6 cory juliis and a twig catfish. The tank has been up and running for 2yrs without a problem. I recently had to move it to a new location, being heavily planted and stocked with small fish i couldnt catch them, so left a couple of inches of water in the bottom and moved it. The water obviously went cloudy, so I didnt notice 4 of the hatchets had bailed for several hours and found them dead on the floor...crap.

The tank has been stable for several months with no further fatalities. I saw some pencil hatchets and as I thought my last one must be lonley so I bought 3. I didnt buy more cause they looked healthy but just a bit off. I knew they were in that day so put it down to that. Big mistake. How could I be sooo stupid. Next day one was dead. Day later the other two were dead. 7 days later 2 neons died. Today all my neons, black neons and blue flames are dead. The uaru look like they are shedding their slime coat, but otherwise okay. The catfish seem okay. How crap is that.

Been through the fish health sticky, but nothing seems to fit. They showed hardly any symptoms. They just seemed a little quieter than normal, then dead. They died with their colour. There was no heavy breathing, no marks on the skin, no back bending, no fungus, no distended stomachs, no bloating, no loss of colour, no flashing....possibly a small lack of appetite and they were a little less active....

Any ideas? :nilly:

Hmmm, catfish are showing red marks on their sides now. On a couple it looks like red pin pricks...not looking good....

smallest uaru is dead.

What was your maintenance routine in the previous tank conditions? To me, this sounds like Old Tank Syndrome. Your fish are not used to the changes in the new environment and are slowly dying for this very reason unless you did water changes in your previous tank setup.

Old Tank Syndrome? Not heard of that. Could that cause them all to die so quickly? I have never lost so many fish so quickly. When I was starting out and a numpty I lost a lot of small fish cause of poor water conditions, but they always died in ones and twos, untill there were none left (neons mostly). The tank use to get a 25% water change every two weeks plus some drastic ones when my daughter did something awful like feeding the fish dog food or pouring in porridge oats.

As of this morning the only fish left are the two big uaru and the twig cat... How efin deppressing... Thats about 12 fish that died overnight. That would have to be extremely bad water quality and everyone would be flashing, no? I cleaned the filter two weeks ago, but if it was ammonia spikes I would have expected it to happen straight away, if i had killed all the bacteria, it should be re established by now....

It just seems really suspect that this is a week after those dodgy looking hatchets died, now everythings gone. Do you know any infections that can kill that quick?

If its not that then my next best guess is my daughter has poured something in the tank again, but she usually leaves the evidence lying all round....gonna do a 50% water change. I didnt before cause I dosed the tank with esha 2000 thinking it might help, and didnt want to give them the extra stress of a waterchange.

Heres some pics. The cory's show some marks but the tetras are clear. Done a 60% water change, but theres not much to save now...bigger uarus are covered in a film, this goes over there eyes but pics are crap....

ah man so sorry for your loss dude

the tank crash would be due to the release of all the trapped toxins that were in your substrate

i would recommend getting some seachem prime as a conditioner it will take care of tank spikes when they happen

next time if you are moving a tank I would recommend bucket the water and use the time to do a solid clean on the substrate. personally I use sand as a substrate much cleaner

so very very sorry to hear of your fishes deaths

it may not mean much but here is a thread you might be interested in
