So i put a pair of convicts into my backyard tank. They were beautiful and pushing 3" each. I came out to check on them about 10 mins ago and they're gone! Deductive reasoning tells me it was a stray cat around my neighborhood, possums that i never see, or a chupacabra did it.

Was it day or night that they disappeared. A stray cat wouldn't have taken both of them as they tend to be solitary hunters. Depending on where you are most North US hunter are nocturnal, well except the two legged kind. My guess would be some neighbor hood kid. I've seen them steel fish in their pockets from pet stores.

that is a bummer for sure..but if there was no lid .. i would suspect they jumped..and then were taken away...

Chupacabra is my vote!

though they likely did jump. or they are hiding that good. unless you emptied it. I swore i lost my koi for weeks.. was getting ready to replace him. Lo an behold there he was! was a white koi in a black pond too...lol

If it was kids.. I vote some baby RBP's next time if they're legal to keep by you :D

Its a 70 gallon acrylic with only about 30 gallons of water in it, placed right next to the door used to get out to the backyard. Jumping is very unlikely unless convicts are known to jump 1.5' and then over a 3 inch lip onto the floor. Also, no one can get into my backyard so kids aren't the problem. I deduced the previous culprits because the terra cotta pots were shifted or turned over and the sand leveled out, indicating something wading in the sand. The time of tank transfer was during the late afternoon. So the window of opportunity is left only to the nocturnal hunters. Birds are out of the question because I have a patio cover.

:(

its the dang chupacabra... cuz I'm only 2 hours away from the border and I heard they fly mass distances.

wow what is this predator ? love to see a pic... maybe i will look it up... yes that sounds most likely then... if the water level was down jumping would not be an issue .. especially that it was two convicts.. sorry for your loss..i looked it up.. if it is this thing... better it got your convicts then you..............:WHOA::WHOA::WHOA:View attachment 366583

liz, chupacabra is a legend, its name literally means goat sucker (lol) because of its habit of killing goats and sucking all the blood out
