Hello; I had the same feeling when I kept a common pleco. The long unsightly strings of fecal matter were all over the tank.
I put some red ramshorn snails in the tank. Pleco waste has a lot of undigested plant matter in it which still has food value. The snails would eat the remaining food material from the pleco waste. I then had a lot of snail waste but it was much smaller in size (and I believe volume) and no so unsightly.
There were two benefits from adding the snails. One was that the floating hornwort plants grew very well ( I could not keep rooted plants with the pleco). The other was that I had a lot of snails around. I used the extra snails as fresh live food for the fish in my other tanks.
