i hate this so much

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If you don't plan on upgrading tanks (which is what it sounds like, as you inquired about keeping the bichir in the 55 for life), I would try to find fish that will fit the tank comfortably in the 55 for life.

Sounds like you are asking about the Boulengerella maculata (Spotted Pike Characin, Peruvian Gar ) which isn't a true gar, and maxes out at about 12".

I've been reading that an 80 gallon is good for life, but nothing smaller.

And apparently their beaks can break easily if they are spooked enough.

ROFLcopters, man. Go to the library and sit in the reference section flipping through audobon and axelrod and baensch atlases of fish. Many truly intense fish exist within the 6" to 9" range that would do fine in a 55g for life. I'm guessing you like what you see at the LFS and want it. But that's just being a victim to the popular choices, man. You can special order some freaking awesome stuff that you'll probably never see for sale in person yet is monster, hardy and suited for aquarium life. You've just got to get your nose in the books, then do the footwork on what catches your eye.

well put

with All the questions that I have been asking I have been trying to find those one or two fish that would be perfect for me. I thought that I had found that fish no less then 20 times. But they always get a little two big for a 55. Some people think that once I ask a question that I'm going to go out and get what I was asking about. I haven't bought a new fish in like 3 months. And the reason I keep asking when some people say no is because some people think they know what their talking about and don't and I want to get as many people that know what their talking about to tell me of I should or shouldn't do something. And theirs a few people every time I ask a new question they tell me no and that nothing I do is right. I'm not going to do anything for awhile untill I figure out what I am going to do and make sure it is perfect. My friend has some books on fish that I have gone through and I still haven't found the right fish yet. I really want to set my tank up right and I am willing to put the time and money into it to make it happen.

I really like EBJD but from what I have read their not very hard when their small and I don't
want to
pay $20 for a fish that has a good chance of dying. What about silver dats I saw somewhere they got 12" or smaller is this true

You know what would be great for you tank?

2 fancy goldfish.. like fantails. ONLY 2.

Or maybe try some smaller african cichlids.

even though dats grow slow id stay away from them. the smallest i think can grow to 18 inches, not sure though. but unless your planning to upgrade within a year to 1.5 years, stay away from dats.

get a green severum and stock around him then?

Why is it I like everything I can't have
There will always be fish that you "wish" you can have. It's not just you, it happens to a lot of people. Keep reading and researching and I'm sure you will find the right fish for you and your tank.
