Put a bit of sponge or some filter floss/polyester batting down the small chamber and as much sintered glass or ceramic media in the large chamber as you can fit and still get the lid on, and I'd say you're good to go.
May want to put a bit of mesh something on top of the media in the large chamber to prevent any small chunks getting sucked into the impeller.

Could I use large smooth stones instead of ceramic marbles or whatever?

I like these in tank filter powerheads. I have DivePower but its a little different. If you need a mesh bag you can get them at just about any lfs. The small bags run like 89 cents at petsmart.
