You can read the stickies on gar care for help with choosing a gar. Since this will be your first gar, I recommend going with a Florida gar, but a few other species will work for beginners but can be expensive and/or difficult to acquire. Just remember that you'll need around a 180 gallon aquarium at minimum for the smaller gar species.
