I have been keeping fish for a while (14 years). Up untill I came across this site a few years ago I have never heard a fish refered to as L330 or whatever. I don't want to sound dumb but what the heck are you crazy people (that's a joke to make myself feel less dumb) talking about? Come on bring me into the loop I want to own some rad fish that's name is not a name but a series of numbers and letters.

There are so many species of Plecos being discovered and available to the hobby before they can be scientifically described. In order to keep track of all of them, they were given numbers to Identify them. "L" being Loricariidae family. I'm not up to speed on the L numbers as well, so don't feel dumb;)

Oh. So how do you obtain said "L" plecos? I have a few plecos now but I'm pretty sure they have already been described.

Agreed, these numbers were assigned by a german fishkeeping magazine called Datz. there is also another system called the LDA numbers for Plecos as well. and unidentified cory spicies are grouped using a C-000 system. You can find more info on this at www.planetcatfish.com HTH.
Cheers

can you get a chart or something how do you even know these things! i just have so much to learn but learning is my favorite part about this hobby!:headbang2

Well thank you for the fast answer and link. I WANT ONE NOW. These fish are probably rare in the fish trade since they are new. So they are probably spendy. My wife is going to kill me.

haha i had the same question in mind when i first came across the "L" word, if your going to get one you should hide the price or tell your wife a different prices, because some of them can go for 200 dollars a piece well for the rare rare ones.
if you need a good vendor i have someone that has very good prices compared to most of the vendors on mfk or any other forums.

Well, the first time I went to get my big plecos for the big tank, my wife spent more on her L-numbers then I did.
I chose the big ugly ones ,she chose the Fancy-pain-in your-wallet-kinda-plecos....
