I'm Where I'm At
first of all, be patient as i'm gonna give a little background........

so as many know and many may not know, i am a huge mma fan and i am a member on an mma site which i mainly lurk for news and updates on fighters and events and things like that. but i am really really active in a certain series of threads over there. I am constantly participating in threads where you recreate an mma related moment using ms paint. i do it for fun and enjoy people getting a laugh out of my drawings. I've been doing this for a few years now and have gotten kind of good at using ms paint

so a few days ago, a random member on that site private messaged me and said he was an author of an unauthorized biography of women's mma fighter Ronda Rousey. He said his book was #6 best seller on amazon or something like that, at its peak. he even provided a link and everything.

so he tells me that he thinks people would by a book of my drawings. he says he would suggest i front some money for promotional stuff. but he said if i was skeptical i don't have to. he'd share royalties with me for each book sold after he has made the money back for the money he would have to put into making the book happen.

he said we would be able to receive receipts to show how many units were sold and everything.

so my thing right now is, i have no clue what goes into doing something like this, no clue if he's trying to scam me or make a quick buck off of my drawings.

he says i can ask him anything i want.

so that's my situation. what do i do? what do i ask? what are the risks? i have a hard time trusting strangers on the internet, let alone real life. on the flip side, i have over 150 drawings. he said we can make a book with 100 drawings. my drawings are just sitting here making me no money. i never intended to make money, i just do it for fun. but if i can make some pocket change, why not?

anyone with business experience or have published a book or anything, please chime in on what i can do and what i should ask and what might some risks be

thanks in advance

IME if something sounds too good to be true, it normally is. I would be ultimately skeptical if i was in your position.

Lawyer up, get an ironclad contract written up, mainly containing the right to royalties, info on sales, and that you are NOT liable for any money that guy fronts on the project. If he flakes, he wasn't for real.

Don't trust him or anyone, get a 3rd party lawyer involved and don't do anything without consulting him. You stand to make money on this if you can get the guy to promote you without you dropping a dime out of your pocket. I'd wager the lawyer fee would be around 250-300 bucks, but if you can make 20 G's off the book then I say go for it, fun experience either way.

Do what pred said. Get a 3rd party lawyer and get that person to contact your lawyer directly. Make or break at that moment.

The above advice is pretty good. Anyone can author and have a book published. It doesn't cost that much. The hard part is marketing it and getting people to buy it.

You provide talent, he provides money, you two split the profit :)

Hello; This seems right. Am I correct in that you have been posting the drawings on webpage forums?

My GFs brother used to fight for Bellator and still runs his own gym where he trains other pro fighters, he has always been hit up by scammers and still gets contacted by them all the time. Unfortunately this is an area where many people take advantage of those with talent but little knowledge of the industry. I highly recommend following the above advice and having a lawyer draft up a contract for you, at worst you'll be out a few hundred bucks and at best you'll earn yourself thousands.
