Ok first off I like making crazy things - always have. I was going to make my own lid for my 55g tank anyway, and I had an idea on how to make it a little more multi purpose then a normal lid. Here is a quick diagram I drew up to give you an idea. I'm horrible at drafting, so sorry many things will have to be worked out as I build it. Thing is Ive never seen anything like this which is ushally a bad sign. It will look a little mad-sceintest 'esq but other then that I'd like imput on whether or not you think it would work.

I think it would work a little like a small sump filter but using gravity and the pump in reverse, saving me from having to drill which im not comfratable doing with this old an aquariam, and in the event of a power failure all I'll lose is my filtration. I came with the idea debating how to make a lid with room for a filter and at the same time be bichir escape proof. Let me know what you think, and unless someone kindly explains to me why this might fail in disaster, I'll try building it next weekend and get some photos of the project. :)

i think it would work, but don't think it would be that effective only being 1 pipe. my suggestion would be to not angle it and instead use a planter box.

make some plastic baffles to keep the water circulating up and down maybe.

not a scale or detailed drawing but i gotta get some sleep;). depending on pump size you could do a center inlet and two returns, or put two on top, put some styrofoam on top with some holes and put a few tropical vines in it for looks (add some filtration but not the point) to hide them.

i've wanted to do something kinda like this but i need to build a nice canopy so the weight is more evenly distributed.

great idea though just start and modify as you go:D nice thing with above tank as long as you start with just enough water to fill the tank and make sure the path of least resistance is to the tank your set.

good luck and can't wait to see it

I think both of these ideas are great....you have got my mind working overtime now

I think it would be perfect for smaller tanks like the 55g mentioned, but how would this idea work on a larger sized tank like say 300g or 400g without having a HUGE and HEAVY filter housing sitting on top of the canopy??

With that big a tank I think a different strategy would be needed for filtration. Wish I had that big a tank, and a big enough house to hold that sort of tank, but right now im just working on my 55g. Something like this might be useful on a big tank as a extra form of filtration in addition to a normal sump, or other form of external filtration. As for the weight I'm hoping to take a chunk out that by using mostly lightweight plastics. That's another thing I'll have to tinker with as i go.

yeah building a planter box work better then the pipe with slope of your. Think about clog, and maintain. This over head filter to me only work for tank 90G or less, much bigger tank require more filtration which over head is not ideally. Here is my what I have for my double deck tank with over head filtration. This is a two 75g tank and my over head box size is 9"x9"x48".
