my female fh has laid tons of eggs today and i'm wondering what to do now. i have no other tanks to separate the male so if i leave him in the tank i guess he'll eat them right? also how do i go about wc and my filters running won't they suck them up? i could buy a 10g for them and move them into that would that work also what do i feed them i was not ready for eggs and have never bred before. also when i got my female she was in a tank with all pacu she has just been with my male for 3weeks she was totally black when i got her could she be having eggs from a pacu and not my male

anybody

Well if you can get the 10gal. set up. The best thing is a sponge filter that only uses air. They are fairly cheap and I have found nothing that works better, especially for fry. Put them in the 10gal. with that and a heater and you should be good to go. If you can't do that then build a divider out of pvc and eggcrate and separate the male after a few days. If he hasn't spermed all over them in a few days he probably won't. Once he has been separated the eggs should either turn slightly black and have almost a small dot in them. This means they are fertile, if they turn white they have been covered in fungus and are dead. It is best to get the male out and let the female raise the brood until i would say they are about a 1/4in. This might vary from person to person but it should work. Hope this helps!

Also I am 105% sure that they are not pacu cross. If there were other cichlids in with here it could be one of them, but it would most likely have to be one of the following for that to even be possible: Any FH, Texas, Midas/RD, Synspillum, Festae, etc. Really only these fish could possibly be the father, I don't think there could be that many others like pacu since they are sooo different as far as family, genus, sp. etc. Oh and turn off your filters, they will eat your babies! Do smaller wc more often as well. Thats about all I can think of to Help. GOOD LUCK and post some pics of the parents!

ok great thanks some of the eggs have turned white how will it take for them to hatch?

white is bad.. white eggs = unfertilized.. tan is good..

When the female lays the eggs you need to have the male come and fertilize them wherever they're at. This should be done at the same time she laid them.

There isn't really that much you can do at this point. Just wait a few days and see if any are tan or hatch already. If they all turn solid white your male hasn't fertilized them. If this happens 3 or 4 more times you could probably assume your male is infertile.

some of the eggs are hatching but the female is eating the babies as fast as they are hatching wtf she is just eating them all
