I just got a fish aquarium and my ammonia levels are high. What do I do??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Did you use a liquid ammonia test? Did youvtest your tap water?

Have you researched how to cycle an aquarium?

Look up MINIMUM tank size for pbass and oscars. Oscars need atleast 90 gallons, and pbass need probably 220+. I am not trying to be harsh. I say sell the fish. DEFINETLY not a good tank size. If there are multiple oscars and Pbass, you need probably 225+.

Stuff good for 60 gallons:

- Small cichlids
- African Butterfly Fish
- Raphael Catfish
- Corydoras
- Ram Cichlids
- Gourami's such as Opaline and Blue
- Leopard Ctenopama
- Rainbowfish such as Bosemani and Parkinsoni

Stuff NOT good for 60 gallons:

- Red Tail Catfish
- Oscar
- Peacock Bass
- Freshwater Stingrays
- Lungfish
- Most species of Bichirs
- Tiger Shovelnose

I can go on and on. Stocking is fun though. duanes duanes is good at cichlid finding.

Please search this site on the proper way to cycle a tank. You will need to start doing large frequent water changes and use water conditioner (Seachem prime) until the water is up to conditions to keep fish. I would recommend contacting local fish store and asking if they have any cycled media you can purchase to help the cycle.
You can address the size of the tank and stocking issues after you have saved the fish.
