Hello there.
I've been a member of the boards for a while, but today I took a strange step and bought a baby RBP. I say baby, it's actually about 3.5", already eaten :)
Anyhow, I did research first, but I just wanted to check:
-He's in a 10G, that's ok for now right? He's just a tiddler.
-Feeding good on bloodworm so far, I didn't want to get any feeders incase they had parasites. I am going to try defrosted prawn tomorrow :) Is it ok to feed everyday? What kind of volume should be fed?
-I have some aqaurium plants. I couldn't find an answer for this online, so i asked the LFS (not sure if they speak the truth) but they said that the piranha shouldn't damage the plants apart from when it runs for cover. Is this true?

Thanks :)
Paul

The bio mass a 3 inch red produces is too much for a 10g....I'd try to upgrade to at least a 20g right now....Feed the little booger 3x's a day...Start them off on color enhacing pellets, krill, and mealworms...Actually, there's a whole variety of other stuff from your asian supermarket....And if you plan to on keeping more than one, don't keep two, get three or more....

As importracer said, you should look into getting a 20 gallon for your little chap, by the time he hits 4 inches for sure. Once you have the 20 gallon that should do him a very long time. Bloodworms are fine, but try to vary his diet on what importracer said. And at his size, try to feed little and often instead of one big feed. While your piranha will do no intentional damage to your plants, just make sure they are rooted well and firmly so he does not move them by accident.

Although people keep one red belly just fine, you get so much more out of keeping a shoal of them. He will be much more timid, shy and skittish on his own compared to if he had two or three friends..

Also, where are you located in England? :)

Ah shame, complete opposite end of England to me. 20 gallons would be good. And yeah, three small feedings would be much better than one big feeding at his size. As he grows, slip into the routine of one big feed a day. And by the time he is of adult size, do a day on - day off feeding. This feeding process is not essential, but greatly beneficial to your piranha.

To work out the portion size, i suggest you measure how much you would feed him in one big feed (at which he should eat as much as he can until his belly is slightly plump and he is not leaving food in the tank for to long). Then simply divide that one big portion into three for next time.

where abouts in the north west mate ? i'm in Leeds, you close to there ?

Lance fish is another good food for Piranhas, you can buy that frozen feed 1 fish 3 times a day and remove any morsels it may leave behind. as it grows feed more accordingley.

Cheers dude, I will ask sometime this week. I got some colour enhancing pellets and some more bloodworm, that'll do until i get lancefish right? He loves the colour enhancing pellets :)
Cheers for all the help so far,
Paul
