Okay so I finally got a new 55-gal tank + stand for my rapidly growing silver aro who is kinda squished in my 20 gal. I was just wondering should I got with a planted set up? Also how should I go about moving my aro? Should I just net him and throw him in the new tank after its been filtered and treated for about a week?

you should cycle your tank for more than a week. You may transfer some of the gravel to your new tank to promote the cycle as well. There are tons of threads on here about setting up a new tank. Congrats on the 55 but plan on a larger one very soon....it wont take the aro long to outgrow that one

If you tranfer the filter and water from the old tank to the new,in addition to whatever new filter you get,you can move him right in as long as you test frequently and do extra waterchanges. Its the bacteria in your filter media thats vital to keeping your nitrites and ammonia to zero.after a few weeks your new filter should be seeded and you can take the old filter off, testing frequently again.A tank without fish wont cycle unlees you do fishless cycling.

The only thing is... I have this crazy green mossey algae in my 20 gal and I dont feel like getting this stuff in my new set up

Well if you would like to transfer your silver into you new tank.. then you should take all the stuff from your old tank and move it to your new tank, all the water, gravel, filter, media or anything else that has beneficial bacteria on it. Then you would be able to transfer your silver instantly. Since you are upgrading to a 55, after you transfer all 20 gallons of water from your old tank to the new one, add about another 10 gallons of new water from the tap and just run the tank as usual. Keep adding 10 gals. every two days untill your 55 gal is full, And don't forget to add water conditioner every time you add new water to remove cholorine and all the other harmfull stuff.
About transfering the silver... i would use a plastic bag and lure him in and then transfer him instead of trying to net him out, that could cause some damages sometimes. Just a prevention. :)
