I was doing my normal gravel washes/water changes and noticed my aro's sponge filters could use some cleaning. I opened the top to remove the filters, cleaned them, and replaced them in the tank before going on to the next tanks. I forgot to close the top.
Some time after moving to the next aisle, he jumped. I didn't see or hear it and went on with my work.
After lunch, I went back to the hatchery to feed out some fry tanks. That's when I noticed he was no longer in his tank. I found him under a rack of 20s and 55s. His face was all busted up from the impact with the concrete floor.
He was barely 2" when I got him and I lost him at just under 14".
I can't believe I left the top open! I just hope this catastrophe helps remind someone else to mind their fish's security.

Big loss there Oddball. Don't know what supply's like where you are, but they're impossible to get here.

Condolences.

If I ever had that happen i'd hit myself 20000294 times.

I really couldn't imagine seeing something like that. Sorry that happened to you though!

sorry bro

Damn sorry to hear about that, hasnt been my week either, a heater apparently sprung a leak and i lost my male black lancers and both of my syn decorus that i've raised since they were an inch long.

Murphy's law still kicks people in the *** when they aren't looking.

Was he the one eating pellets and non living foods? (i dunno how many you have, you have so many nice fish)

OUCH!! That really bites man. I know how hard they are to get, especially down here..haha...bugga it all. Did you put it in the freezer? I have soo many of my fish that have died in our freezer its not even funny. Ironically my silver arowana is in there...jumped exactly the way yours did, after a water change. Bugga. Sorry man! really am!
