So a few days ago I picked up another Nandus Nandus. I already have one that is about 4-5". The new one was the biggest at the LFS. He was about 2 1/2".

In the tank I had a nice piece of twisty driftwood. I decided to take it out two days ago though because my hydrolycus tatauaia would hide behind it all the time.

So I took it, examined it lightly and shook it in the tank and then after I got it out incase any catfish didn't want to come out of it. Then I put the driftwood in a small bucket filled with sand and decorations. Later that day I heard a little noise coming from it. I figured the driftwood just shifted causing water to drip on the nearby plastic bag.

Today I notice that my larger nandus has been swimming around by himself. I look around the tank and cannot find the smaller nandus. I just finished working with PVC cement so I let it go and just figure he is hiding really good. Ten minutes ago I still don't see him. I go digging through my tank and I don't see him anywhere. Yesterday I moved everything away from the tank/stand because I added a new canister filter, so the only thing near the tank is the new canister filter.

Now I remember the driftwood. I run over to the bucket and pull up the driftwood. Then I move around the decorations in the bucket and I find him in the sand :(.

I feel so terrible. I haven't felt so bad since I got my first fish and accidentally gave it chlorine poisoning. I've messed up before and some fish were eaten/mauled but they were either euthanized quickly or got better. The poor nandus dried up in a bucket of sand and decorations. :(

The funny thing is, I heard an occasional noise from the bucket and didn't think a thing of it. Whenever I hear an unusual sound I check it out pretty fast. So the first time I don't, this happens.

If you hear something funny, always investigate. And whenever you remove something from a tank make sure you check and make sure there are no fish hiding/tangled in it.

I've done things like this too . . . whenever I remove driftwood from the tank, I put it in a bucket or plastic bin or something, with an inch or two of water in the container . . . if anyone "hitchhiked" on the driftwood, they should eventually fall into the water and splash around

works best with catfish, loaches, etc. . . .

Aw man... that blows, sorry...

I almost did the same thing with one of my Rafael Cats. I put the driftwood on my floor, and when I looked 10 minutes later, there he was. Luckily he was okay/

I had this happen on one of my tanks with a big old yoyo loach... luckily I placed the driftwood over a bucket of water, not sand.
Still, quite a surprise to see him in the bucket the next day!

I knew someone who killed a Royal Pleco and a Eupterus by bleaching driftwood while they were in it

Just FYI, a 5" Nandus will eaily eat a 2.5" Nandus.

That is what I thought. Seeing them together though, the smaller one appeared to be much taller in profile. The smaller one seemed to have a giant mouth compared to the big one as well.

I also have a midnight catfish in the tank who is active in the day that has never been attacked by the Nandus. The big one seems pretty peaceful and I have only seem him eat feeder goldfish once.

Today, I noticed that my higher self nandus are swimming around. I look around the tank, and can not find a smaller nandus.
