I was browsing the cichlid tanks and had to ask what the 8" silver future-monster in the lower row was. Looked to me like a wee baby even at 8". It was a f'ing tarpon. I asked the guy WTF they were doing selling fish like that, and they got on accident (stow-away in an order, I guess). So my LFS has a tarpon. Only 8" and it really looks like it's a baby, just like a new-born guppy-fry looks like a baby. Holy crap, if I only had a very very large private lake.

I'm just stunned because any yahoo could walk in there and say "I want that thing." They could take it home and put it in their "HUGE" 29 gallon tank, say "there's still room for more fish" and think they're the coolest fishkeeper in the world.

I really believe you should have to get a license to buy certain fish, and a tarpon has no place in any given LFS.

they get very big, there a cool fish to have.

Tarpon may be some of the coolest fish to watch grow out but so few of us truly have the space to keep an adult!! I still want one!!

I have plenty of space, just not enough that holds water.

Pffft, seal off half your house and fill it with water. I'm already measuring my hallway to see if there's room enough for a cot so that I can cram more tanks into my room. But any apartment I can afford couldn't house a tarpon whether or not I needed to accomodate myself.
