Here is my 55gal sump built for my yet to be set up 180gal tank. It is done except for the two covers and obviously the plumbing. So far the only thing I think I would had done differently would be to have made the media area larger. Oh well, live and learn.

Okay I am stuck here. I have the inlet side of the sump all plumbed or at least have the parts. The outlet side is confusing me. I have a MAG drive 9.5 pump, it has a 3/4 inch outlet. The bulkhead to the tank is a 1/2 inch. How do I do this. Is it ok to reduce the pump from 3/4 to 1/2 inch? Does it matter how and where I do it.

Thanks for the help.

its perfectly fine to reduce the output tube on your mag but it will put strain onto the impeller. i would suggest running an exhaust end before you reduce the piping and have a ball valve to adjust the flow rate.
I really appreciate your help, especially so fast, but I got to admit, I really dont know what your talking about. Can you explain please.

Throttling back a centrifugal pump (like a magdrive) by means of reducers or valves is good for the motor and makes the pump use more electricity. Valving it will not be of any value. Either way, using a valve or using the reducer is he same and if (though it will not) using a reducer would put a strain on the impellar, so would a valve (though it will not)

nice sump. Im picking up a 55gal tomorrow to use as a sump for my(dads) 125 gal. I know its overkill, but like they say, you can never have enough filtration.

Nice Job.

Put the reducer at the tank (basically as far from the as you can), and you can make a bypass right after the pump's output, just put a 'T' after the pump with a valve on the new outlet (of the 'T') and routed back into the sump to control water pressure.

Beautiful WeeNe858, I couldn't have drawn it better if they let me have sharp objects :D
