from what i have read the females seem to be more aggressive than the males but as with any fish temperments will vary greatly from fish. i am keeping a few babies in a 20 gallon for now.

I had 2 and they hated each other in my 150g once they hit around 4 inches.
 
They do fine at roomtemp I dont have a heater or anything.

3 of my slightly bigger bowfin get along but the 4th bowfin is sightly smaller ad very aggressive towardsmy fish the others have beengreat.
