I'm gonna talk about platys...yup, that's right, Platys.
The last three months I've had a little breeding program going and now I've got about 100 of the little dudes. Red Wagtail, Gold Wagtail and now Gold Mickey Mouse and Dart tail.
What I didn't realise was how quickly the "Babies" reproduce....
My first batch aren't even 10 weeks old and already 2 of them are pregnant...!
I'm gonna be a grandad!
But on a serious note, anyone tell me if this is normal and will the "Babies" fry live..?
And will they come out as tiny as I think they're gonna?
It's all quite exciting to be honest - it's the first time I've ever had fry live and grow into little fishes and I love them dearly, even though most of them will be gettin traded in at the lfs.
I'm goin to keep 8 of the Gold Mickey Mouse Platys as breeding stock as thats the strain I want to develop (and you rarely see them up here in Glasgow, so good price!)
Any advice and answers to my queries would be appreciated.
Thanks

I've had guppys, swords and mollies in the past, but never kept platys... Prefer them to other livebearers now, can't say why.
Since the whole point of settin up the breeding programme, apart from the fun of it, was to try and get some cash back from all the outlay on my three tanks, livebearers were the obvious place to start. I'm only back in the hobby since Dec.2005, so didn't wan't to start with Motoros straight away.........!!
I looked at what sold quickly in the lfs, and what was the easiest to breed and Platys were the answer.
Simple really.
Gonna have to keep an eye on the pregnant 10 week olds, or their fry will end up as fish food if they come out really tiny.
Dirty little buggers.... single mum platys...whatever next?!

they have little fish enclosures made out of mesh that i used for my swords when i was breeding them, also in plastic.as soon as the babys r born, take the mom out and feed the babys crushed flake food.that will keep them alive until they can eat bigger food.then you can move the babys to a different cycled tank, and grow them out.

Thanks for the replies...I didn't make things clear... the pregnant platys I'm talking about are the 10 week old fry from my first brood! My mommies have had four broods between them and now the first brood are gettin pregnant themselves...!!! That's what I'm surprised about!
Grandad time....
That's what I meant about THEIR fry comin out TINY.
They've gotta be smaller than usual, I was just wondering what's the youngest that anyone has had platys breed and the fry survive.

Breeding tank / fry tank been up and running for a couple of months, had about 100 fry so far.

Here's where they live...
