I've got a problem that seems to be decimating my Platy breeding stock and I'm running out of ideas as to what is causing it. Symptoms are listlessnes, what appears to be mouth rot, some of them then lose scales near gills and on upper body - like white "missing" patches. Swimming in quiet areas near top of tank, then lying dying on the bottom. Seems to take a few weeks before whatever it is kills them. I've had to cull SO many fish....

Tried heat and salt and water changes.
Tried treating for mouth rot.
Tried treating for parasites.
Tried treating for fungus...... nothing has worked.

This has gone on for months now and I've lost half the fish that I've bred. Most of the afflicted fish are in the 1 - 1 1/2" range. Fry don't seem to be affected at the moment. Bristlenose Plecs and baby Corys that share the tank don't seem bothered either.
Any ideas?
HELP!

Have you tried Furan-2? It's the only med I've had success with in treating this livebearer scourge. Also, adding an immunity booster, such as Immuno-Vital and Vita-Chem will help restore the fish after fighting the infections.

Havn't seen it before, but will try and source it a.s.a.p.! I hope it available here in the UK as it sounds like the answer to my problems. Thanks again Oddball, I'm once more in your debt....! Lets just hope I can get some and it works!

Went looking for Furan-2 today, but, as I suspected, you can't get it in the UK. It's not allowed to be sold here.
Had a very informative conversation about it with the lady owner of one of my lfs today. She recommended trying an antibiotic as Furan-2 and similar medications are banned in the UK. My fiancees dad is a doctor, so we'll ask him next. Might end up going to a vet! Oh well....it's all a learning process..
