We live in a very bushy part of Melbourne in Australia, and last weekend a tree came down across our powerlines :( we haven't had power for 3 days, on day 2 my hubby went and bought me a generator so I could run my tanks, but 2 of my Green Terror's had already died and it was touch and go for the others for a couple of hours. I did a water change straight away and refilled with warm water and the rest have seemed to survive. Very upsetting tho and I am wondering, if it happens again, what's the best way of keeping my fish alive?? Because I can't just use the generator for tanks :D RIP little fishy

battery powered aeration system and water changes.
And, if you live somewhere cool, power supply for heater and wrap the tank in blankets or other insulation to make the power last longer. Have plenty of dechlor at hand since you'll be doing daily water changes without your filters running, should you choose to go that route.

I personally have one of those battery jumpers with an AC outlet that I use to power my aquaclear and one heater in an outage. Works for me. But only for a few hours, not days. And just on Oscar's tank, everybody else is screwed. I'm not made of money.

Ok good ideas guys thanks, I'll have to go and have a look what my lfs has. Unfortunately due to where we live we have power outtages all the time, but usually for hours, not days. I was just grateful to my hubby for letting me use the generator for the tanks as we lost alot of food due to fridge not working, but he agreed the fish were more important :-) I'll be more prepared next time

When I lived out in the country, power failures, lasting days, were not uncommon. I bought a generator and had an electrician fix up a connection, right by my power meter. It had a switch that I would throw to prevent backfeed from the generator into the power lines and a plug and cord for hooking up my generator. I could run the whole house, or nearly the whole house anyway, with a 7500 watt generator.

Don't tell my power company but I would disconnect the meter and wire up my generator right to my panel...
I'd be watching TV while my neighbors were using candles:D
