I woke up this morning and checked on my tank as I do everyday and find my SB Endli laying upside down on the bottom of my tank...

I have had him about 6 months and am at least the 3rd MFK member that I know of that he has been passed down to.

I'm not sure what caused it as my water parameters seemed fine. 6.0 PH (which is low, but I have a lot of driftwood in the tank IE: no sudden drop), 0 ammonia, 0 nitrates, 20-40 nitrates which are also not unusual as my tank is pretty overstocked and I'm not sure how long he has been sitting in 81 degree water.

Everyone else in the tank seems fine, so I'm not sure what caused this other than what i hope to be old age. I know Bichirs live up to 20 years, but this guy was a captive bred SB, so I'm not sure if that would affect his lifespan.

He was an awesome fish and my first loss after around a year in the hobby.

I think I might do something like that.

Sorry for your loss, seeing that the tail is kinda torn tells me it was chase or bullied by the others at night. SB's tend to stress out easy compared to the regular ones. I keep five of with the platinum in a separate tank. Again sorry for the loss :(

Yeah, his tail got nipped 3 to 4 days ago and was already healing up nice, I didn't think much of it.

As we know, SB endlis come from inbreeding and genetic deformity. These same traits may very well shorten life span, or cause other health issues. Sorry for your loss. He was quite a looker.

Thanks guys, I know that's why you stopped selling captive bred bichirs.
