PROBLEM: I had to move my fluval 404 off my 125g African cichlid tank, which was running great with a DYI plastic drawer wet/dry and an AC110.

I knew the filtration would need to be stepped up, so.....
I added more filter pads to my wet/dry (now 4 thick, and could go as much as 7 or 8 pads thick) and added more pot scubbies to my bio-bale. (running about 300GPH)
I added a dual, XL Whisper hang on, that I had sitting around, for more mechanical. (Impeller needs to be replaced, so it is a loud whisper!
)
Still running an AC110 but added 2 bags of Purigen today. Bottom: sponge, middle: ceramic rings, top: Purigen.
Should I move the Purigen to the Whisper on each side of the returns? It would fit nicely there. This would allow me to add something to my AC110. like pot scrubbies or another sponge.
Even with all that, my water quality has still suffered. Without the canister, the water is just not crystal clear anymore; polished. I probably should have had all the existing filters stuffed to the max with bio and mechanical to begin with. You can not have too much filtration is the MFK mantra!
Is there something else cheap that I can do?
For right now, spending $100+ for another filter is not an option.
thank you in advance for your input.
