PROBLEM: I had to move my fluval 404 off my 125g African cichlid tank, which was running great with a DYI plastic drawer wet/dry and an AC110.

I knew the filtration would need to be stepped up, so.....
I added more filter pads to my wet/dry (now 4 thick, and could go as much as 7 or 8 pads thick) and added more pot scubbies to my bio-bale. (running about 300GPH)
I added a dual, XL Whisper hang on, that I had sitting around, for more mechanical. (Impeller needs to be replaced, so it is a loud whisper!:D )
Still running an AC110 but added 2 bags of Purigen today. Bottom: sponge, middle: ceramic rings, top: Purigen.
Should I move the Purigen to the Whisper on each side of the returns? It would fit nicely there. This would allow me to add something to my AC110. like pot scrubbies or another sponge.
Even with all that, my water quality has still suffered. Without the canister, the water is just not crystal clear anymore; polished. I probably should have had all the existing filters stuffed to the max with bio and mechanical to begin with. You can not have too much filtration is the MFK mantra!:hypnotize

Is there something else cheap that I can do?
For right now, spending $100+ for another filter is not an option.
thank you in advance for your input.

yes.....about 10-20 bucks depending on what kind of powerhead......

TOP FILTER .......

not pretty but will do the job....

powerhead - up to top of the tank - where a container of any sort will sit - drill hole(s) out the bottom of the container - drips back into tank..

fill container with whatever media you got lying around......

bigger the container - better the filtration....

Are your water params suffering or is it just debree or water polishing you would need to add different things for each.

BTW the link you posted takes you to your "accessible filter" thread.

debris and water polishing. It seems to have a super fine cloudiness to the tank.
Its not like solid debris, it is "ghosty". Kinda reminds me of a cycling cloudiness. That is why I added bio.

Go get another ac 110 for 39.99 . Price match at petsmart .com. The 50 gal rated filter was 19.99. I just grabbed one for my 10 gal tank....Now the water is ice!
