can someone Id this fish, it's sick right and looks like a green mamba, blue diamond, or cobolt. I got it from a friend, it's 5.5-7 inches long. could it just look sick because I brought it home monday and it was in the 40's out side, and then yesterday I did a 50-75% procent water change.

Other photos can be found on simplydiscus.
I'd really like to find some wild tefe discus, and have a 125 gallon aquarium setup again.hillbilly what do you think? a sick blue diamond, or a very stressed one?

um should I try to get my money back, and give my friend the discus back? he has plenty of tanks to put him in.

You are going to have to learn that you can't put discus in any tank that contains any amount of ammonia. Discus will NOT tolerate any ammonia. You will NOT be successful at keeping discus until you learn this. We have been through this before. Sorry, but this is the way it is. I would suggest that you just keep this fish in your tank to cycle it with, since it has been affected by ammonia anyway. When your ammonia and nitrite levels are zero, then your tank will be cycled, provided the fish lives that long. After your tank has cycled, cull the discus in this tank, do a water change, and you should be able to then keep discus in this tank without damaging them. Good luck!

this is what I'm trying to figure out, the tank is cycled.it's been up for at least two and a half to three months now. here is how it went down. I feed the discus I had 3 mediums, and 5 juvies. then I sold the 5 juvies, then went and bought this discus from my friend, and 8 cory catfish. then tuesday night I did a 75% water change with tap water adding prime as the tank filled up.
could it be that the 8 cory catfish and this discus produced ammonia, or some of the feed I feed the fish spiked the water because not all of the food got ate. it was a mix of brine shrimp, blood worms, and beefheart.

I'm going to go test my water again.. ok here are the reading now after using some ph down from frizpets :confused::screwy:
temp 84
ammonia- 0
ph-7.0
nitrate between-0 and 5
what the hell is wrong with my water.
ph- 7.0

What is the nitrite reading?

OK. How many gals. does the tank hold, and what is the filtration?
It's a 90 gallon. 4 sponge filters -- 2 hagen elite double sponge filters. should I get a canister, or some power filters?

.25 :(:screwy::cry: wth is going on with this tank. should I age my water?

Dude, you're tank is cycling, or mini cycling, basically the same thing. You're going to have to bite the bullet, and tough it out until the bacteria level builds enough to reduce the ammonia and nitrite levels to zero. After discus have been exposed to ammonia, they are worthless anyway if they survive. Their gills, fins, and organs are damaged. So just leave them in there to cycle your tank, and cull them when it cycles, and get some more. Also, if you are feeding enough food to have it left over in the tank, get it out and feed less next time. Rotting food degrades water quality quickly. When you clean sponge filters, squeeze them out in a bucket of tank water. Don't over clean them.

OK thanks, Darrell. I think one of my problems is that I also leave the sponge filters in there when I do a water change. would that cause the bactria in them to die each time I do that? also what do you mean by cull? . ok I plan to get a 110-150 tank, and I want to make it a show tank in my bedroom, I should get a canister right. oh by the way I also have been forgetting to rinse the sponges in aquarium water each week. thanks for reminding me.

would a ro/di unit be helpful? what minarals will I have to add back to the water.
if I use a ro/di unit?
