I had an Ornate at one point, but it was all i could do to feed him.
He wouldnt eat.
He grew from 7" to 10" while i had him, so i know he ate something. I had fed him a lot of meal worms at one point, but he would ONLY eat them if i shoved them right in front of his face with a skewer.

I guess it might be hopeless having a Polypterus with glutons like my Oscar in the tank that eat everything before it hits the ground.

But is there any Polypterus that are really aggressive about feeding or maybe that arent afraid of much?

I want to have one again, but i dont want to have one that i have to hand feed like a newborn kitten.

Any thoughts?

I feel it depends on the bichir. I have had almost every type of bichir. My ornates were very aggressive at feeding time. Endlicheris tend to be very aggressive as well at feeding time.

IME, the most agressive eaters among my bichirs are my P. endli endli, its hard to feed them cause they seem to be always hungry. so if you were to ask me i would say P. Endlicheri Endlicheri (the one on my avatar, eats like a pig)

while there are behavioral difference between species, i feel it depends more on the individual.

agree with infblue, my ornate is picky as hell

Cool. Thanks.

When i had my senegalus, i noticed he would only really eat when he wanted to, which was every few days, and then he would gorge. other days he just wouldn't eat, even with food all around him. maybe its cause he was smaller, but i just thought that might help.

giving him some time might help too. when i first got my lap, it was active as hell and come out straight away when food was presented. after that, he became more shy and so slow on feeding that all was gone before he got there. But now, since a week, hes way cooler again. he now comes up and eats worms from my hand. he needs to become a bit quicker as the eels usually take them straight in front of his mouth but its very cool. took him like 5 months or so...
